Dr. Paul Musey is the Eskenazi Health Foundation Scholar of Emergency Medicine and Vice Chair of Research and Innovation for the Indiana Unversity School of Medicine (IUSM) Department of Emergency Medicine. He is originally from Atlanta, Georgia and received his B.S. in Chemistry from Georgia State University in 2005 before graduating from Emory University School of Medicine in 2009. He subsequently completed an Emergency Medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2012 and stayed on there as faculty until he took a faculty position at IUSM in 2014. At IUSM he went on to complete an Emergency Medicine research fellowship and earned a Masters in Clinical Research.
Dr. Musey’s clinical research interests surround the evaluation and management of psychological contributors to ED presentations. Specifically, he has built a research program focused on the evaluation and management of how underlying mental health conditions (anxiety, depression or PTSD) affect the trajectory of emergency department (ED) care, patient-centered outcomes and healthcare resource utilization. Additional interests include the evaluation and elimination of health disparities in emergency care. He has developed expertise in patient engagement and partnerships in the evaluation of evidence-based treatment options. He has been PI or site PI for a number of ED clinical studies in this area and has received funding from the Emergency Medicine Foundation, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Foundation, NIH, and most recently from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). He currently holds a leadership position in the Indiana University Health System as Medical Director for IU Health’s Enterprise Clinical Research Organization (ECRO) where he works to shape the vision for supporting high-impact clinical trials across the health system with a special focus on the Cardiovascular and Neurosciences Institutes.
