The DECAD (DEcisions about Cancer screening in Alzheimer’s Disease) Study
What is DECAD?
This study will be testing the impact of a decision aid for caregivers of older women. The decision aid is aimed to support caregivers in decision making around cancer screening for older women with dementia.
Who can participate?
DECAD enrolls caregivers who must be:
- Caring for a female 75 years of age or older
- Caring for a female with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia
- Caring for a woman who is not a nursing home resident
What do I do in the program?
When you sign up for the program, there will be a total of three caregiver interviews completed over the phone. During the first interview, we ask you questions about your loved one’s health and memory. Then, we will send you one of our educational pamphlets with health information. At least a day before your loved one’s next primary care doctor appointment, we will review the pamphlet with you. After the appointment, we will complete the second phone interview and ask for feedback on the pamphlet you received. The third and final phone interview will happen 15 months after the second interview. For each interview you finish, you will receive a $25 grocery store gift card.
