Marianne Matthias, PhD, shares how she got started working in health equity research.
Transcript:
I didn’t start out doing health disparities or equity work.
As I started doing work in chronic pain, I became more aware of the research out there pointing to the inequities that have been documented across health systems, especially for Black patients, who just really suffer disproportionately from pain and from the consequences of pain and often aren’t offered the same treatment options as White patients.
And so I think it just became a way that I could use what I know and what I can do as a researcher to try to shed more light on the issues and then try to improve those inequities to the degree that I can.
