Brian Dixon, PhD, MPA, explains how diverse, nationwide data show COVID-19 vaccination benefits in pregnancy.
Transcript:
This is a great example of a very large study across multiple states involving electronic medical records that are captured during routine healthcare delivery for pregnant persons. It’s a diverse population. It’s geographically diverse. It’s racially diverse. There’s lots and lots of different pregnancies — some pregnancies that are high risk, some pregnancies that are normal risk. So in terms of the data, we really looked at a comprehensive, representative set of data on people who are pregnant, and so that gives us a lot of confidence in our findings that the vaccines are truly effective in this population.
Dr. Dixon says that pregnant people in Indiana are less protected from COVID-19.
Transcript:
The data from Indiana specifically show that our population of pregnant persons were less likely to be vaccinated than the other states. So we have a higher proportion of women who are not vaccinated during pregnancy compared to the other sites. So this study is really important for the state of Indiana. It’s really important that public health leaders in Indiana, that physicians in Indiana, that women in Indiana see these data and understand that COVID-19 vaccine protection is effective for pregnant people.
