Hertko appointed Regenstrief Institute Chief Operating Officer

Joyce M. Hertko, PhD, M.S., has been named chief operating officer (COO) of the Regenstrief Institute, effective August 16, 2021. She joined the Institute in 2019 as chief of staff and has served as interim COO since November of 2020.

As COO, Dr. Hertko will provide the leadership management and vision necessary to ensure that the proper strategy, structure, processes and governance are in place to effectively meet the mission and impact the objectives of the Institute. As COO, she is also responsible for helping to cultivate internal and external relationships and partnerships, and effectively communicate the mission and work of Institute.

“Dr. Hertko is a results driven, strategic thinker with extensive experience and knowledge that we value,” said Peter Embí, M.D., M.S., Regenstrief Institute president and CEO. “We are confident that she will be instrumental in helping maintain the Institute’s momentum in support of our important mission of pioneering research and dissemination of discoveries to improve health; innovating to solve real-world problems; and translating and implementing solutions to drive improvements in health and healthcare.”

Prior to coming to Regenstrief Institute, Dr. Hertko was director of Community Outreach and Engagement with Indiana University Health and served as president and CEO of the Ruth Lilly Health Education Center. She has more than 25 years’ experience working in higher education including IU School of Medicine, The University of Mississippi, Illinois Institute of Technology and Western Illinois University.

Dr. Hertko holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Knox College, a master of science in college student personnel from Western Illinois University and a doctorate in higher education administration from IU-Bloomington. She has been a volunteer at the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini Marathon and Cathedral Soup Kitchen in Indianapolis for more than a decade and also is an active volunteer at the Boulevard Place Food Pantry.
