A gap exists between data collection for clinical care and clinical research needs. Regenstrief President and Chief Executive Officer Peter Embí, M.D., M.S., participated in a panel of experts to discuss the best strategies to bridge the clinical and research informatics domains and ultimately improve patient care.
The panel “Clinical Care and Clinical Research Together” was the first of a three-part series exploring the intersection of the pharma workforce with clinical informatics and research. It was hosted by Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), Pfizer and Duke University School of Medicine Master of Management in Clinical Informatics program.
HIMSS is a global advisor and thought leader supporting the transformation of the health ecosystem through information and technology. Members include more than 80,000 individuals, 480 provider organizations, 470 non-profit partners and 650 health services organizations.
Dr. Embí was joined on the panel by Amy Abernathy, M.D., PhD, principal deputy commissioner of food and drugs and acting chief information officer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA); Charles Jaffe, M.D., chief executive officer at Health Level Seven (HL7) International; and Robert Goodwin, M.S., MBA, vice president and head of operations at the Center of Excellence, Pfizer, ILT TransCelerate Biopharma Inc. They spoke about aligning data collection between the clinical and research domains to help speed up the process of bringing new therapies to market and decreasing the cost.
Dr. Embí started the discussion by explaining how clinical informatics differs from clinical research informatics. He also spoke about learning health systems research and using informatics to enable a virtuous learning cycle where research informs care and care informs research.
