Regenstrief researcher leads Scottsdale webinar on hypoglycemia findings

Regenstrief Institute research scientist Michael Weiner, M.D., MPH, led a Scottsdale Institute webinar and presented his recent research findings related to hypoglycemia.

Dr. Weiner explained the statistical modeling that identified the magnitude of risk factors for hypoglycemia. He also discussed a pilot study using continuous glucometers and other wearable devices designed to make better predictions of glucose levels in older adults with diabetes who live in urban areas.

Dr. Weiner’s overall research focuses on measuring and improving the quality, coordination and delivery of health services for older adults. His research has included projects addressing hypoglycemia, a condition characterized by a low level of blood sugar and often related to the treatment of diabetes, along with personal habits. It can cause symptoms that include cognitive impairment and is also a risk factor for dementia.

The Scottsdale Institute is a not-for-profit membership organization of prominent healthcare systems. The institute’s goal is to support its members as they work to achieve clinical integration and transformation through information technology. The Scottsdale Institute provides forums, such as teleconferences, to promote collaboration, education and networking.

In addition to his role as a research scientist at Regenstrief, Dr. Weiner is an associate director of the William M. Tierney Center for Health Services Research at Regenstrief, director of the Veterans Affairs Health Services Research and Development Center for Health Information and Communication, and a professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine.
