Sikandar Khan, DO, MS
- Research Scientist, Indiana University Center for Aging Research at Regenstrief Institute
- Co-Program Director, COVID-19 Recovery Program for Older Adults, IU Center for Aging Research, Regenstrief Institute
- Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep and Occupational Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine
- Director, Indiana University Health Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Survivor Center, Indiana University School of Medicine
Dr. Khan’s research is focused on the nexus of acute respiratory failure, delirium in the intensive care unit (ICU), and cognitive and physical function outcomes in critically ill older adults. As of 2022, Dr. Khan is funded by the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Aging (NIA) Paul Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award to study the role of oxidative stress in critical illness, ICU delirium and post-ICU aging. His research activities to date include measurement of delirium duration and severity, identification of delirium risk factors, exploring delirium’s association with dementia through peripheral blood-based biomarkers and testing novel non-pharmacological interventions to mitigate delirium in the ICU. Dr. Khan’s clinical expertise is focused on maximizing the cognitive, physical, mental health and quality of life recovery for survivors of critical illness.
