In a randomized controlled trial of 216 primary care patients with depression and elevated cardiovascular risk, a modernized collaborative care intervention significantly improved depressive symptoms compared to usual care. However, no changes were observed in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk biomarkers. These results suggest that while early, tech-enabled depression treatment is effective for mental health, it may not be sufficient alone to reduce CVD risk—highlighting the need for alternative or additional interventions to address CVD in this population.
