Dr. David Haggstrom, MD, MAS, and Dr. Eric Vachon, PhD, RN, discuss their feasibility study that showed implementing a tailored personal health record improved outcomes for colorectal cancer survivors.

We’re seeking not only to understand the effect of our personal health record upon these symptoms but also how best to implement the personal health record, and implementation can take place at multiple levels — at the provider and the health system level. So we’re seeking input from healthcare providers and leaders about how best to implement the system and also how do patients implement this patient-centered technology into their daily lives.

We’re really interested in these colorectal cancer patients following up with the surveillance guidelines that they need to, in order to help reduce their chance of cancer recurrence.
We ask patients what they want, what they don’t want. So we’re not adding so much in that it’s overbearing for them. So by giving them tools like this, providing them knowledge through the tool, we can help try and build up their confidence and their ability to be able to follow through with going for their colonoscopy or making their appointments with their oncologist.
So we’re trying to give them the tools and the knowledge that can help them through their cancer treatment and beyond in to survivorship.
