Regenstrief Research Scientist Thomas Imperiale named IU distinguished professor

Affiliate Scientist Kosali Simon also 1 of 5 recipients

Regenstrief Institute Research Scientist Thomas Imperiale, M.D., has earned Indiana University’s highest academic appointment of distinguished professor. This title recognizes faculty for their pursuit of excellence in their field.

Dr. Imperiale has conducted groundbreaking research on preventive screenings for colorectal cancer. He focuses on developing and testing screening strategies based on individual risk factors and assessing diagnostics and therapeutics. His work has strengthened the understanding of colorectal cancer and potentially saved many lives.

In addition to his role at Regenstrief, Dr. Imperiale is the Lawrence Lumeng Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the IU School of Medicine. He is also a core investigator at the VA Health Services Research and Development Center for Health Information and Communication, Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center and a staff gastroenterologist serving patients in four Indiana hospitals.

He was one of five IU faculty to receive this appointment in 2022.

Affiliated Scientist Kosali Simon, PhD, also earned the designation. Her research has informed economic and healthcare policy, with a particular focus on the impact of law and policy on low-income households and people of color. She is the Herman B. Wells Endowed Professor and Paul H. O’Neill Chair at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IU Bloomington.
